TECH CREW

Tech Crew is an internship where only about 18 girls are chosen in TYW:LSA. Every intern has their own specific task - I happen to be the Web Designer of our School's Website.

Managing the school's website on a daily basis is a handy job. From uploading recent school events to informing parents about upcoming meetings, being a website designer in TYWLSA Tech Crew has allowed me to live up to my potential.

I manage to help TYWLS of Astoria become a better school by taking part in this wonderful opportunity known as Tech Crew.

Be True To Your School

PD Day

November 4, 2014

Although on Election Day students are off, but as Tech Crew Interns we were required to stay and help teachers from all over TYWLS schools that came to TYWLSA. As ways of helping, we directed teachers to the rooms they were required to attend for the workshops. Getting to talk to different members of The Young Women Leadership School network was an amazing opportunity to notice the difference between TYWLS schools teachers. While workshops were in session, we circulated around the fifth floor assisting teachers with technical help. With this, I learned plenty about the technology that is in our school today.

Planning Intensives

November 20, 2014

Being the teacher for TYWLS 3rd Eco Friendly Dress-Making intensive along with two other peers, I was successfully able to grasp the idea of recycling correcting. Our intensive's goal was to showcase the students creations in an annual Eco-Friendly Fashion show, to teach students the proper way of recycling and to demonstrate the importance of self-reflection (We made students reflect on their work on their own website daily basis) Our plan was to allow the students to learn on their own about recycling, design, environmental issues and measurements. They will be required to sketch, measure and sew in order to create a durable recyclable dress.

The Hour of Code

December 10, 2014

On the first day of intensives, Tech Crew interns were given the opportunity to guide students to complete coding within an hour. The Hour of Code is a worldwide event where millions of students take their time out to learn coding which is basically computer science. While my classmates were coding, me and a partner circulated the room to guide anyone who does not understand the concept. Navigating my peers through the process was a fantastic way to build my leadership skills.

Teaching the Eco Friendly Dress-Making Intensive

December 10, 2014- December 24, 2014

Day One: Introduction

December 10, 2014

My first day of teaching a class was amazing. Students seemed eager to learn about creating eco-friendly dresses out of various recyclable materials. As me and two other peers taught this intensive, we saw students struggle with the concept of recycling but then learning on their own which materials they should use, and which ones that are restricted. As a way to start off the class, we played the Wind Blows. This was a great way to get students involved and for them to know more about each other. We also gave them handmade surveys and quizzes as a way to help interpret themselves a bit better since the 6th Annual Eco Friendly Fashion Show was all about YOU. The dresses students made all reflected themselves. Lastly, to promote technology into our intensive we made it a requirement for students to create their own websites which include daily reflections and photos.

Day Two - Day Nine: Dress Making

December 11, 2014

On our second day we watch how-to videos for students to get a better understand on creating paper dresses. After they were able to obtain this idea, they went straight to creating their group dress. (A student was required to work in pairs of 2 therefore making three dress; one of theirs, one of their partner's and the third one the group dress). With the previous EFFS dresses, students created brand new dresses using some of the same materials. At first the bin full of last year's torn up newspaper dresses. After they began working on their own with last year's as the base, they were able to design beautiful masterpieces

Students  graded on the following outcomes:

  • (Create) Produce or develop a product for expression.

    • Express yourself using a given genre.

At the end of the day, students worked on their personal websites. We required an About Me tab as well as an Intensives tab to make their life easier once they get to high school and need a website of their own. Under the Intensives tab, they reflected by stating what they accomplished and what goals they have for themselves the next class day.

Visiting Google Headquarters

November 19, 2015

On Thursday, November 19, 2015, Tech Crew students were guests in the Google Headquarters located in Chelsea Market. Workers of the Google Headquarters kindly gave us a tour around the building; it was indeed a beautifully designed architecture. There were rooms that were specifically designed for conference areas where workers would get together to discuss matters. There were also rooms with speakers and a screen set up so workers can video call workers if they were not able to physically show up in the building. Along with TYWLS Tech Crew Students that were touring Google Headquarters were two Nepalese students that were a part of a prorgram called She's the First. She's the First helps provides scholarships to girls in low-income countries with the goal of creating first-generation graduates. These two young women traveled across the globe to come visit this headquarter. A film of theirs was also presented which talked about how they struggled to get a proper education since not a lot of girls get this opportunity. Along with their films presentation, a worker from Girls Who Code talked about her program. Overall, the experience in the Googel Headquarters was amazing and has further inspired me to achieve a career similar to this. Through this experience, I have gained access to how a true working environment looks like. I will be able to implement the collaboration skills the workers have portrayed throughout their work experience in the future.
